7 Common DUNS Number Mistakes Nigerian Businesses Make (And How to Avoid Them)

We've processed DUNS registrations for over 100 Nigerian businesses from our Lagos Island office. The same mistakes come up again and again — and they're all avoidable.

Some of these mistakes cause a 2-week delay. Others cause outright rejection. A few have cost businesses contracts worth millions of naira.

Here are the seven most common ones.

Mistake 1: Business Name Doesn't Match CAC Exactly

This is the single most common reason DUNS applications are delayed or rejected — and the most preventable.

What happens: Your CAC certificate says "Greenfield Solutions Limited". You fill in the DUNS application as "Greenfield Solutions Ltd". D&B treats these as different entities. Your application gets flagged for additional verification or rejected outright.

Real examples we've seen:

• "& Co." vs "and Co."
• "Limited" vs "Ltd"
• "Nigeria" included in one but not the other
• Extra space in the middle of a name
• Hyphen vs no hyphen

The fix: Copy your business name character-for-character from your CAC certificate. Don't abbreviate. Don't assume "Ltd" and "Limited" are the same to D&B's system — they're not.

This also matters after you get your DUNS. If you later bid for a contract and your bid says "Greenfield Solutions Ltd" but your DUNS record says "Greenfield Solutions Limited", the procurement system will flag a mismatch and your bid may be disqualified.

Mistake 2: Using a Personal Address Instead of Your Registered Business Address

What happens: Your CAC certificate shows your registered office address. You fill in the DUNS application with your home address or a different office. D&B's verification process checks your address against public records and CAC filings. The mismatch triggers additional scrutiny or rejection.

Why this happens: Many Nigerian businesses register with CAC using one address but actually operate from another. When it comes to DUNS, the address must match your CAC registration — not where you actually sit.

The fix: Use the address on your CAC certificate for your DUNS application. If you've moved and updated your CAC, use the updated CAC address. If your CAC address is outdated, update your CAC first, then apply for DUNS.

Mistake 3: Applying for a New DUNS When One Already Exists

What happens: D&B sometimes creates business records automatically from public data sources — CAC filings, news mentions, trade directories. Your business may already have a DUNS number you don't know about.

When you apply for a "new" DUNS, D&B finds the existing record and returns the same number. This isn't a problem by itself — but if the existing record has wrong information (old address, wrong name), you now have a DUNS with bad data and you don't know it.

The real problem: You get your DUNS number, use it on a bid or Apple enrollment, and it gets rejected because the underlying D&B record has incorrect information that you never checked.

Mistake 4: Applying for DUNS After Seeing the Tender Deadline

What happens: A business sees a government tender with a 2-week submission deadline. The tender requires a DUNS number. They apply for the free DUNS. It takes 30–45 business days. They miss the deadline.

We've seen this cost businesses contracts worth ₦20 million, ₦50 million, and more.

The math:

• Free DUNS: 30–45 business days = 6–9 weeks
• Typical tender deadline: 2–4 weeks from publication
• Result: You will miss the deadline

The fix: Get your DUNS number before you need it. If you're serious about government contracts or international business, get your DUNS now — not when a deadline is looming.

Mistake 5: Not Updating Your DUNS Record After Business Changes

What happens: You got your DUNS number two years ago. Since then, you've moved offices, changed a director, and rebranded. Your D&B record still shows the old information.

You submit a bid. The procurement team verifies your DUNS. The address doesn't match. The director listed is no longer with the company. Your bid is flagged.

Or you try to enroll in Apple Developer. Apple calls your old phone number. No answer. Enrollment rejected.

What Nigerian businesses get wrong: They treat DUNS registration as a one-time task. It's not. Your D&B record is a living document that needs to reflect your current business reality.

The fix: Update your D&B record immediately after any significant business change:

• Office relocation
• Director changes
• Business name change or rebrand
• Phone number or email change
• Significant growth in employees or revenue

Mistake 6: Submitting Expired or Inconsistent Documents

What happens: D&B requires supporting documents to verify your business. Common document mistakes:

• Expired director's ID — D&B rejects IDs that are past their expiry date
• CAC status report older than 3 months — D&B wants recent verification
• Documents that don't match each other — Your CAC says one address, your utility bill says another
• Poor quality scans — Blurry or incomplete documents cause delays
• Wrong document type — Submitting Form 2 when Form 7 is required, or vice versa

The fix: Before submitting your DUNS application, check:

• Director's ID is valid and not expiring within 3 months
• CAC status report is dated within the last 3 months
• All documents show the same business name and address
• Scans are clear, complete, and in PDF format
• You have the correct document type for your registration (Form 2/7 for newer registrations, status report for post-2020 registrations)

Mistake 7: Using an Agent Who Doesn't Know Nigerian Business Requirements

What happens: Some agents advertise DUNS registration services at very low prices — ₦50,000, ₦100,000, ₦200,000. They submit your application without properly reviewing your documents. The application gets rejected or delayed. Then they ask for more money to fix it. Or they disappear.

• Submitted applications with wrong business names
• Used generic document templates that D&B rejected
• Didn't know the difference between a CAC status report and Form 7
• Promised 24-hour DUNS (impossible — minimum is 5–7 days even with fast-track)
• Couldn't explain why the application was rejected

Red flags to watch for:

• Prices significantly below ₦750,000 for fast-track
• Promises of 24-hour or 48-hour DUNS
• No verifiable track record with Nigerian businesses
• Can't show you their own DUNS number
• No physical office address

The fix: Work with agents who can demonstrate experience with Nigerian DUNS registrations specifically. Ask to see their own DUNS number. Ask for references from previous clients. Verify they have a physical office.
