What Is CAC Registration?

CAC registration is the process of legally incorporating your business with Nigeria's Corporate Affairs Commission. It's what makes your business a legal entity in Nigeria.

When you register with CAC, you get:

  • A Registration Certificate confirming your business exists legally
  • An RC Number (Registration Number) — your unique Nigerian business identifier
  • Legal protection for your business name
  • The ability to open a corporate bank account
  • Legal standing to enter contracts, sue, and be sued

CAC registration is mandatory. You cannot legally operate a business in Nigeria without it. It's the foundation everything else is built on.

Types of CAC Registration

  • Business Name — Sole proprietorships and partnerships (BN prefix)
  • Private Company Limited by Shares — Limited liability companies (RC prefix)
  • Public Limited Company — Publicly traded companies (RC prefix)
  • Incorporated Trustee — NGOs and associations (IT prefix)

What Is a DUNS Number?

A DUNS number is a 9-digit global business identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) — an American company that maintains the world's largest commercial database of business information.

When you get a DUNS number, D&B creates a business profile for you in their global database. This profile is accessible to businesses, banks, and government agencies worldwide.

Your DUNS number is used to:

  • Verify your business identity internationally
  • Build a global business credit file
  • Register as a vendor with international organizations
  • Enroll in Apple Developer and Google Play organization accounts
  • Bid for government contracts (especially internationally funded ones)
  • Apply for business loans and financing

DUNS registration is not mandatory for operating in Nigeria. But it becomes necessary the moment you want to do business internationally or bid for contracts that require it.

Key Differences Explained

1. Who Issues Them

CAC is a Nigerian government agency. Your RC number is a Nigerian identifier — it means nothing outside Nigeria.

D&B is a private American company operating globally. Your DUNS number is recognized in over 200 countries. When an American company, a UN agency, or Apple Inc. wants to verify your business, they check D&B — not CAC.

2. What They Prove

CAC registration proves your business is legally incorporated in Nigeria. It's about legal existence.

DUNS number proves your business is a verified, active entity in D&B's global database. It's about global credibility and credit standing.

3. Which Comes First

CAC always comes first. You cannot get a DUNS number without a CAC registration. D&B requires your CAC certificate and RC number as part of the DUNS application process.

The sequence is always:

  1. Register with CAC → get RC number
  2. Apply for DUNS → get 9-digit DUNS number

4. What They're Used For

CAC RC Number is used for:

  • Opening a Nigerian corporate bank account
  • Filing taxes with FIRS
  • Applying for Nigerian business licenses
  • Local contracts and agreements
  • Proof of business registration in Nigeria

DUNS Number is used for:

  • International vendor registration
  • Government contracts (especially internationally funded)
  • Apple App Store and Google Play organization accounts
  • US government contracts (SAM.gov registration)
  • Business credit building with international lenders
  • Verification by multinational companies

5. Cost

CAC registration costs vary by business type — typically ₦10,000–₦50,000 in government fees, plus agent fees if you use a registration service.

DUNS number is free from D&B (30–45 days) or ₦750,000 for fast-track registration through Raspib Technology (5–7 days).

6. Renewal

CAC registration requires annual renewal (Annual Returns filing). Failure to file annual returns can result in your company being struck off the register.

DUNS number never expires. Once issued, it's yours permanently. You just need to keep your D&B record updated when your business details change.

Do You Need Both?

Yes, if you:

  • Bid for government contracts (especially federal or internationally funded)
  • Work with international clients or multinationals
  • Want to publish apps on Apple App Store or Google Play as a company
  • Are seeking international financing or investment
  • Want to register as a vendor with UN agencies, World Bank, USAID, etc.

CAC only is sufficient if you:

  • Only serve local Nigerian clients
  • Don't bid for government contracts requiring DUNS
  • Publish apps as an individual (not a company)
  • Have no plans for international business

For most businesses reading this, you'll eventually need both.

Common Misconceptions

"My RC number is my DUNS number" No. Your RC number is issued by CAC and is typically 7 digits. Your DUNS number is issued by D&B and is always exactly 9 digits. They are completely separate identifiers from different organizations.

"I have a CAC certificate so I don't need a DUNS" CAC registration and DUNS registration serve different purposes for different audiences. CAC proves you're legal in Nigeria. DUNS proves you're credible globally. You need both for international business.

"Getting a DUNS means I'm registered with the Nigerian government" No. D&B is a private American company. Getting a DUNS number has nothing to do with Nigerian government registration. It's a separate, international process.

"My DUNS number replaces my RC number" No. They coexist. Nigerian contracts and local business use your RC number. International contracts and global verification use your DUNS number.

"I can get a DUNS without CAC registration" No. D&B requires proof of legal business registration as part of the DUNS application. Your CAC certificate is a required document.

Real-World Scenarios

Scenario 1: Bidding for a World Bank-funded contract You need both. CAC proves you're a legitimate Nigerian business. DUNS is required by the World Bank's procurement system for vendor registration.

Scenario 2: Publishing an app on Apple App Store as a company You need both. CAC proves your company exists. Apple uses your DUNS to verify your company with D&B before approving your organization account.

Scenario 3: Opening a corporate bank account in Nigeria CAC only. Nigerian banks require your CAC certificate and RC number. They don't ask for a DUNS number.

Scenario 4: Registering as a vendor with Shell Nigeria You need both. Shell's vendor onboarding process requires CAC documents for Nigerian compliance and a DUNS number for their global vendor database.

Scenario 5: Applying for a local Nigerian government contract Usually CAC only, but increasingly DUNS is required for larger federal contracts. Check the specific tender requirements.
