How to Retrieve and Update Your DUNS Number in Nigeria 2026

Last Updated: July 14, 2026

You got your DUNS number months or years ago — and now you can't find it. Or your business has moved, changed directors, or rebranded, and your D&B profile still shows the old details.

Both situations are more common than you'd think. We deal with them every week at our Lagos Island office.

This guide covers exactly what to do.

Why Your Existing DUNS Record Matters

Getting the DUNS number was step one. Keeping it accurate is what actually protects your business.

Here's the problem: Dun & Bradstreet builds your D&B business credit file around your DUNS record. When a bank, international client, or government agency looks you up, they see whatever is in that record — right or wrong.

If your record shows:

  • An old address you moved out of two years ago
  • A director who left the company
  • Outdated revenue figures
  • The wrong business name after a rebrand

...that's what they see. And it can cost you contracts, credit, and credibility.

Part 1: How to Retrieve Your Existing DUNS Number

Method 1: Check Your Own Records First

Before going anywhere else, search your own files:

  • Old emails — D&B sends your DUNS number via email when it's issued. Search your inbox for "Dun & Bradstreet" or "DUNS"
  • Previous proposals or tenders — If you've ever included your DUNS on a bid document, it's there
  • Your website — Some businesses list their DUNS number in their footer or company profile
  • Old invoices or contracts — International clients sometimes record it on vendor forms

This takes five minutes and often solves the problem immediately.

Method 2: D&B Free Lookup Tool

If you can't find it in your records, use D&B's free lookup:

  1. Go to D&B DUNS Lookup
  2. Enter your business name and country (Nigeria)
  3. Add your city (Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, etc.)
  4. Review the results and match to your business

What to watch for:

  • D&B may have multiple records for businesses with similar names
  • Your record might appear under a slightly different spelling
  • If your business moved, it might show your old address

Method 3: Contact D&B Directly

If the lookup doesn't return your record, contact D&B support:

  • D&B Global Support: support.dnb.com
  • Provide your business name, registered address, and CAC number
  • They can search their database and confirm your DUNS

Realistic timeline: 3–7 business days for a response from D&B support.

Method 4: Let Raspib Technology Handle It

If you've tried the above and still can't locate your DUNS, or if you need it urgently for a tender or client deadline, we can retrieve it for you.

We have experience navigating D&B's systems for Nigerian businesses and know exactly how to locate records that don't show up in standard searches — including records created under old business names, previous addresses, or slight name variations.

Part 2: How to Update Your DUNS Business Profile

What Can You Update?

D&B allows you to update the following information on your DUNS record:

Field Can Update? Notes
Business name ✅ Yes Must match updated CAC
Trading/DBA name ✅ Yes
Registered address ✅ Yes Must be verifiable
Phone number ✅ Yes
Email address ✅ Yes
Number of employees ✅ Yes
Annual revenue ✅ Yes
Industry/SIC code ✅ Yes
Ownership structure ✅ Yes Requires documentation
Parent company ✅ Yes
Website URL ✅ Yes

When You Must Update Your DUNS Record

Don't wait until a client flags it. Update your D&B profile immediately when:

Business moves address Your DUNS is tied to a physical location. If you move offices and don't update D&B, your record shows a business operating from an address you no longer occupy. This raises red flags during vendor verification.

Director or ownership change New directors, change in shareholding, or a business acquisition — all of these need to be reflected in your D&B profile. Banks and investors check this.

Business rebrand or name change If you've changed your trading name or legal name with CAC, update D&B to match. Mismatched names between CAC and D&B records cause verification failures.

Significant growth If your employee count or revenue has grown substantially, updating this improves your D&B credit score and business credibility.

Contact details changed D&B may try to verify your business by calling or emailing. If those details are wrong, verification fails.

How to Update Your DUNS Record Yourself

Step 1: Access Your D&B Account

  • Go to D&B Business Directory
  • Log in to your account (the one used during registration)
  • If you don't have login details, use "Forgot Password" with your registered email

Step 2: Locate Your Business Record

  • Search for your business using your DUNS number or business name
  • Click "Is this your business?" or "Manage this listing"

Step 3: Submit Your Updates

  • Edit the fields that need updating
  • Upload supporting documentation (see below)
  • Submit for D&B review

Step 4: Wait for Verification

  • D&B reviews all changes before publishing
  • Standard timeline: 10–30 business days
  • You'll receive email confirmation when changes go live

Documents Required for Common Updates

Address Change:

  • Updated CAC status report showing new address
  • Utility bill or lease agreement for new address
  • Director's ID

Business Name Change:

  • New CAC certificate with updated name
  • CAC change of name certificate
  • Director's ID

Ownership/Director Change:

  • Updated CAC Form 7 (particulars of directors)
  • New director's valid ID
  • Board resolution (if applicable)

Revenue/Employee Update:

  • Recent audited accounts or management accounts
  • No formal document required for self-reported updates, but D&B may request verification

Common Problems We See With DUNS Updates

D&B Can't Find Your Record This happens when the original application used a slightly different business name or address. We've seen records filed under "Ltd" vs "Limited", or with a street number transposed. The fix is knowing how to search D&B's database properly.

Updates Rejected Without Clear Reason D&B sometimes rejects updates if the supporting documents don't match their internal records exactly. The error messages aren't always helpful. We know what they're looking for.

Old Record Merged With Wrong Business In rare cases, D&B merges records they believe belong to the same entity. If your record has been merged with another business, you'll need to raise a formal dispute with D&B. This takes time and requires specific documentation.

Login Access Lost If the person who registered the DUNS has left the company and you can't access the D&B account, you'll need to go through D&B's account recovery process. This requires proof of business ownership.

Multiple Records for the Same Business D&B sometimes creates duplicate records — one from your original application and another from third-party data sources. Duplicate records can confuse clients and lenders. They need to be merged or one deactivated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I lost my DUNS number. Can I get a new one? A: You don't get a new one — your existing DUNS number is permanent and tied to your business. We retrieve the existing number from D&B's database.

Q: Can I update my DUNS number itself (the 9 digits)? A: No. The 9-digit DUNS number never changes. What you update is the business information attached to that number.

Q: My business moved from Lagos to Abuja. Do I need a new DUNS? A: No. Update your existing DUNS record with the new address. You only get a new DUNS if you open a separate business location — each location can have its own DUNS.

Q: How do I know if my D&B record has wrong information? A: Search your business on D&B Business Directory and review what's showing. Compare it against your current CAC details.

Q: Can a competitor or third party change my DUNS record? A: D&B collects data from multiple sources, including public records and third-party data providers. Sometimes incorrect information gets added from these sources. You can dispute and correct it.

Q: My DUNS was registered by a consultant who no longer works with us. How do I get access? A: You'll need to go through D&B's account recovery process, providing proof that you are the business owner. We can guide you through this.

Q: Does updating my DUNS affect my D&B credit score? A: Keeping your information accurate generally helps your D&B rating. Outdated or inconsistent information can negatively affect how lenders and partners perceive your business.

Q: How often should I review my DUNS record? A: At minimum, once a year. Also review it immediately after any significant business change — address, directors, name, or ownership.
